I had such a time getting this to post that I forgot to recap who/what this handout is designed for.
It is designed for a group of 6th and 7th grade students who have been learning the differences between biography and autobiography. They now are about to begin a 6week summer session where they will learn how to create their very own autobiographies using PowerPoint, or a Blog, or they can make a CD/DVD. They are intermediate level learners in this subject. In the actual handout, there is one slide that uses my voice to give examples of some ideas to include in one's autobiography. Of course I used a font size that is legible to the students, along with limiting the visuals and they are meant to jog long term memory, so for example, next to the words "record and interview" I placed an animated clipart of someone interviewing and recording it. I tried to adhere to the 5 rule except of slide 5, because, it is a one page synopsis of the entire course expectation for the 6 weeks. I am very aware of the benefits of multimedia theories and want to design an interactive syllabus if possible, because I know my students will respond to this very well. While the cognitive load is not too extensive for this course, the directions are, so using visuals along with audio should work to maximum benefit. I really am proud of my one page handout I emailed everyone earlier today, too bad it was created in Word and therefore is not useful for this session, but I am asking anyone interested to please comment on it and offer suggestions about this 6 page handout as well as the one page.
I really want to thank Kathy for responding to my earlier emails because your explanation of how to save a PowerPoint to a jpeg is what saved me this week. This is truly a collaborative effort. Oh and Dr.Baek I am sorry for the multiple files throughout the day but you know I am just very dedicated to learning.
Take Care celeste
p.s. I saw Eman's handout and found it quite detailed and interesting.
hi celeste I like your post it has a lot of great details. Its really helpful to the other students when they read your details about your handout for example : who are your student and how many are they, also you told us about the font size too. great work and I learned how to save a PowerPoint to a jpeg from Kathy too thank you kathy :) and thank you for your (p.s) :-D
Celeste...thanks for sharing your ideas for your handout. I like the idea of having a contract for the students. Each slide was easy to follow and the graphics went well with the written text. I wish we could hear your voice on the first slide. I think that's a great idea to include. It makes the handouts more personal.
Here's a suggestion on the 5th slide. Is there anyway to make the title and heading fonts a little smaller so the other text size can be larger? Or can the assignment or assessment information go on different pages? It might be a overwhelming for a student to read all of that on one slide. Just a thought!
Celeteste, I love your slide show. It is very attractive, effective, professional, and follows the design principles outlined this week beautifully. I believe your students will enjoy it and be more willing to sign the contract based upon presentation.
I too had difficulty publishing to my blog and finally had to upload it to my Web site and provide hotlinks. I followed Kathy's instructions and saved it as a jgp, but couldn't get it to import or paste into my blog. Maybe it is a WordPress issue.
I am currently finishing up my Master's degree and earning a teaching credential in special education. I hope to graduate Spring 2011.
I am married and we have two cats.
